Fyerool Darma

"My current body of serial work, Moyang and Dongeng, are informed by written and oral histories of Nusantara, a geographical body of islands now separated by political borders. The serial work assumes a reflexive role in the present state of postcolonial amnesia, to pose questions to canonical narratives and to reflect on the roles of historical players – how history might have been different were they to be perceived differently. The pair of paintings from the Moyang series is juxtaposed to offer dialectical positions on the historical treatment of players in the ‘founding’ of modern Singapore. Portrait no. 7  transposes the head of an indigenous migrant onto a portrait painting of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the ‘founder of modern Singapore’.

Portrait no. 8 alludes to a pair of contending brothers: the heir apparent Sultan Hussein Mua’zzam Shah, the ‘Colonial Puppet’, who is best remembered for signing away his birth right in exchange for a nominal title; and his brother Sultan Abdul Rahman Mua’zzam Shah, ‘Si Komeng’, who later became the Sultan of Lingga-Riau.

Drawing from historical and ethnographic materials, Fyerool decentres received portraitures through formal strategies that include pictorial cropping and identity masking.

Fyerool Darma works primarily in conceptual painting, appropriating and manipulating semiotically saturated imageries to deconstruct and decentre canonical narratives.
