The sequel to the Red Note series (2013), Red Note Part II revisits Wilfred’s Pengerang hometown to record the derelict of partially demolished homes that had earlier received the government’s notice to vacate – ‘red note’. Wilfred’s interest in this latter series was to capture the structural shell of living rooms and allow the walls and abandoned objects to tell stories about their erstwhile occupants.
Wilfred Lim’s photographic practice finds its most sustained subject in the form of the artist’s Pengerang hometown in Johor, Malaysia. While it stems from the personal and is at times autobiographical, Wilfred’s body of Pengerang-centred work is also inflected with a desire to tell stories of a coastal village community in the path of plans for economic development.
