Yap Soke Kee

"My studio work is centred on the idea of the grotesque. I can trace this interest to the blood and gore in video games, but my artistic references have been the fleshy, meaty and diseased bodies of Rubens and Jenny Saville, and the violent recklessness of Francis Bacon. I want to make works that unsettle and disturb; I want viewers to experience pain when they look at my work. "

Soke Kee completed her International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP) in 2015, and is preparing to further her art training with a degree programme. Her focus on the grotesque for her final year portfolio began with studies of the female torso, seemingly peeled to the flesh. Her studio work developed to acquire tactile and deeply visceral attributes, jettisoning allusions of form in painting while simultaneously experimenting with sculptural form by binding paint with gel wax.
